SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: A vibrant three-day traditional Attan festival in Spin area of Wana, South Waziristan Lower, concluded on Monday, marking a colourful highlight of Eidul Fitr celebrations in the region by attracting huge crowd.

The event, arranged by locals, brought together a large number of people including tribal elders, youth and children. The event served not only as a source of entertainment but also as a platform to revive and preserve centuries-old traditions of the area. It created an atmosphere filled with joy, unity and cultural pride.

Throughout the three days, the venue remained lively with participants dressed in traditional attire, reflecting the rich cultural identity of the region. Smiles were visible on faces as people gathered in large circles to perform Attan, the traditional Pakhtun dance having deep cultural and historical significance.

The rhythmic beats of drum echoed across the field, energising the dancers, who performed with enthusiasm and coordination. The Attan performances, marked by synchronised movements and increasing tempo, captivated the audience and created an engaging cultural experience. Not only youth but elders were also seen participating in Attan.

Locals say such events revive tribal heritage and strengthen community bonds

Local tribesmen told this scribe that Attan had great cultural importance as it was an integral part of their identity. “This is not just a dance; it is our heritage. Our forefathers used to perform Attan in the same way on drumbeat. Today, we are proud to follow in their footsteps and keep this tradition alive,” said an elder.

Some participants of the festival, who had returned from abroad to celebrate Eid with near and dear ones, said that such gatherings provided a rare opportunity to them to reconnect with their roots and strengthen ties with their community.

An important feature of the festival was rendition of traditional Pashto songs alongside Attan. The combination of music, dance and communal participation added depth to the event, making it both emotionally resonant and culturally enriching.

Elders present at the festival said that such events were once a regular feature of tribal life. They said that cultural festivals played a crucial role in promoting peace, harmony and social cohesion in the region. In an area that has witnessed various challenges over the years, such positive activities offer a constructive outlet for the youth and help to foster a sense of belonging and unity.

The organisers of the event said that engaging young people in cultural and recreational activities was essential for steering them away from negative influences and encouraging them to take pride in their heritage.

The successful conclusion of the Attan festival was marked by a renewed commitment by locals to preserve and promote their cultural traditions. They expressed the hope that similar events would be organised at a larger scale in the coming years.
