GUJRANWALA, June 21: Chicken rates have gone up significantly in the city, as elsewhere in the Punjab, during the last one month or so.
A survey carried out by Dawn reveals that the chicken is being sold at Rs135 per kilogram these days — almost double the rates the shopkeepers were charging until a few weeks ago when the bird flu scare was at its peak.
The rates of chicken and other poultry products are expected to rise further, as the farm owners are claiming production shortage. Some farmers this correspondent talked to say most of over 3,000 poultry farms in the city were wound up after heavy losses in the wake of the bird flu scare.
A farmer says now the poultry industry is recovering and it will take another couple of months before the market situation improves.
The consumers, in the meantime, complain that the market and price-control committees have failed to deliver and must be stirred into action.
ARREST WARRANTS: A local court issued on Wednesday the warrants for the arrest of former headquarters SP for not appearing before court in a case.
Reports said former headquarter SP Abdul Karim failed to show up despite issuance of summons. The judge, Abid Husain Qureshi, issued warrants for his arrest and ordered his production in court after arresting him.
ROBBERY: Robbers plundered cash and valuables worth hundreds of thousands of rupees from a trader’s house in Garjakh on Wednesday.
According to reports, four armed men entered trader Liaquat Ali’s house, held up the inmates and took away Rs300,000 in cash and 22 tolas of jewellery.
POs HELD: The Garjakh police claimed on Wednesday to have arrested two proclaimed offenders involved in the murder of three people during a dacoity bid.
The police said Azam alias Azhar and Shakeel had killed three people during a dacoity strike. Arms were recovered from them.
