MIRANSHAH: A suspected vehicle-borne suicide attack near the Chashma Sarbandki check post on the Bannu-Miranshah Road in North Waziristan left one civilian dead and 19 people, including two security personnel, injured on Friday evening, police and hospital officials said.
According to police, a vehicle laden with explosives came close to the post, located near a football ground, and detonated with a powerful blast.
Sources said the explosion was heard far and wide. They said most of the injured victims were civilians since a number of locals were present in the nearby ground.
Following the explosion, the Bannu-Miranshah Road was closed for traffic.
Medical superintendent of Miranshah DHQ hospital, Dr Asif Iqbal, said the injured included children, elderly people and young men, adding that four of them were in critical condition and were being provided medical treatment.
Police sources said two security personnel were among the injured.
Dr Iqbal said an emergency had been declared at Miranshah hospital. He added that the hospital had adequate medicines and facilities and that all injured were being provided immediate medical care.
Hospital sources said that one of the injured civilians later succumbed to his injuries. Further investigation into the attack was under way.
