KARACHI, June 20: To achieve the target of promoting development works in katchi abadis timely and effectively, all concerned departments would have to work together, said Waseem Akhter, Adviser to the Chief Minster on Local Bodies and Katchi Abadis, while presiding over a meeting of the governing body of the Sindh Katchi Abadis Authority here on Tuesday.

The meeting approved Rs63.517 million budget for the Authority and noted that Rs21.2 million would be spent on the construction of low-cost housing units. Five thousand people would be provided such housing units, with all civic amenities, by the name of ‘Sasti Basti’ in Karachi, Dadu, Gharo, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Thatta and Khairpur.

The governing body approved allocation of Rs4.4 million water supply and irrigation projects.

The meeting was told that a model katchi abadi would be established and its residents would be provided with lease facility. In the first phase, Essa Basti of Federal B Area has been selected for the purpose.

Park, school, hospital and playground would be developed in Essa Basti after shifting its residents temporarily to a multi-storey building. Later, housing units would be constructed in the locality with comprehensive planning. After completion of this project, the process would be replicated in other slums.
