ISLAMABAD / PESHAWAR: Amid ongoing regional tensions, Pakistan continued its actions against Afghan aggression on Sunday, with reports suggesting that security forces had taken control of a number of Afghan positions along the border.
In an update on Sunday evening, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said that 415 Afghan fighters had been killed, while over 580 had been injured so far.
He claimed that Pakistani forces had destroyed 182 check posts and captured 31. He also revealed that 46 locations across Afghanistan were targeted in aerial strikes.
AFP journalists in Kabul reported hearing explosions in the Afghan capital on Sunday, while the Taliban government claimed they were responding to aerial attacks by Pakistan.
Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal, however, said the government had temporarily suspended sharing Pakistan Air Force and drone footage with the media, in view of the current regional situation.
“The purpose of this decision is to safeguard national security and operational strategy,” he wrote on X, adding that the operation against terrorist elements was “advancing with full intensity and wisdom”.
On Sunday, security sources said that Pakistani forces had captured an Afghan Taliban central post near North Waziristan. Upon the approach of Pakistani forces, Afghan Taliban fighters reportedly fled the post, sources said.
The Pakistani military subsequently took control of the central post and cleared surrounding compounds during what was described as a “full-scale retaliatory action”, removing flags hoisted by the opposing side.
Drones
A number of drone attacks were also reported from Attock and Mohmand, which resulted in no loss of life.
Two drones were brought down in two different incidents in Fatehjang and Basal towns of Attock on Sunday, officials confirmed.
According to initial reports, one drone was brought down near a railway crossing in Fateh Jang, where it reportedly fell in the area of Mohalla Sadiqabad.
Another drone was reported to have crashed near Pindi Sarhal in the Basal town area of Attock.
Separately, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) crashed into a government school building in the district headquarters of Ghalanai, officials said, as tensions persisted along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border with reports of artillery fire and aerial activity.
No casualties were reported, and authorities said the incident did not cause significant structural damage. However, security in and around the compound was immediately tightened, and the area was cordoned off for inspection.
The drone, said to have approached from an unknown direction, struck the ventilator of a classroom at the Governor Model High School, located within the district headquarters Ghalanai compound near the deputy commissioner’s residence. Debris from the UAV was also found in the school’s veranda.
Confirming the incident, Mohmand DC Muhammad Yasir Hassan said security forces were “attempting to shoot down” another drone that was detected in the airspace.
Security sources claimed that drones were also heard in parts of Ambar tehsil.
Measures in KP
Authorities on Sunday said to have put the district headquarters hospital in Bajaur on high alert amid ongoing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
At least two mortar shells fired from Afghanistan landed in the Bara Laghari area on Saturday evening, but caused no loss of life.
The District headquarters hospital in Khar, the major public health facility in the district, has been put on high alert, owing to the prevailing tension in the border areas of the district, said Dr Muhammad Hayat Afridi, medical superintendent of the hospital.
Dr Afridi said that they have instructed all hospital staff, including doctors, to remain on alert, and routine leaves have been suspended to ensure 24/7 availability.
Meanwhile, authorities in Bajaur district also announced that 39 public sector schools in various border areas will remain closed until further orders due to the prevailing security situation.
According to the notification, the decision to keep the schools, located in different areas along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, closed was taken at a meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner Shahid Ali Khan.
At least 54 government schools in Mohmand district have been temporarily closed owing to the prevailing security situation and heightened tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, according to an official notification.
The notification, issued from the office of the Deputy Commissioner Mohmand, stated that all listed schools located in the highly vulnerable border areas of Tehsil Baizai, Tehsil Khwezai and Tehsil Safi will remain closed until further orders.
