QUETTA, June 18: The central council of the Pakistan Oppressed Nations Movement (Ponm) on Sunday elected Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Dr Qadir Magsi of the Sindh Progressive Movement as president and general secretary of the alliance, respectively.

The council, which met here under Ataullah Khan Mengal, took stock of domestic political situation and made some “important decisions”, which would be announced in a press conference on Monday, sources said.

The council also elected Mahmood Khan Achakzai chief of Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party as the alliance’s new president of the alliance in place of Ataullah Mengal.

Sources said that participants “strongly desired” that Sardar Mengal, should continue to lead the Ponam as patron-in-chief of the nationalist alliance but the veteran Baloch leader was reluctant to hold any post.

The meeting also elected Dr Hayee Baloch chief of the National Party as vice-president.

Other office bearers would be elected on Monday, sources said.
