GUWAHATI, June 15: More than 250,000 people have been displaced by floodwaters in India’s northeast where at least 13 people have died since the monsoon hit a fortnight ago, officials said on Thursday.
Incessant rains caused fresh flooding in Assam state on Wednesday, forcing 92,000 people to flee their homes, Bhumidhar Barman, the state’s rehabilitation minister told AFP.
“Breaches in embankments and rising levels of all major rivers have led to floodwaters inundating fresh areas, affecting an estimated population of 242,000,” he said.
Another 10,000 people were cut off in neighbouring Tripura state.—AFP
