NORTH WAZIRISTAN: A civilian was killed and several others injured after an exchange of fire between security forces and militants in Zeraki village of Mirali tehsil here on Sunday.

According to local sources, heavy gunfire erupted when security forces launched an operation following reports of presence of suspected individuals in the area. During the operation, militants opened fire, prompting a retaliatory response from the forces. The exchange of fire, which continued for several hours, involved the use of heavy weapons, causing significant damage to civilian property.

As a result of the crossfire, a local resident, identified as Kaleem Zeraki, was killed, while several others sustained serious injuries.

Eyewitnesses reported that the Bannu-Miranshah Road remained closed during the firing, while walls of houses, shop shutters and vehicles were riddled with bullets. Several families were forced to flee their homes.

The injured were rushed to Mirali Hospital, where the condition of some was described as critical.

Family members of the deceased and local residents stated that Kaleem Zeraki was not involved in any suspicious activity and was present in the courtyard of his house when he was hit by gunfire.

Residents expressed grave concern over the incident, pointing out that similar events have occurred in Mirali and surrounding areas in the past, often resulting in civilian casualties.

A local youth, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “Every time we are told the situation is under control, another incident takes place. Our children, women and elderly are all living under constant fear.”

According to official sources, security forces have launched a search and clearance operation in the area following the incident to apprehend those responsible.

The district administration said the situation is currently under control and security has been further tightened. Police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
