FAISALABAD, June 13: The district and sessions judge has asked the Faisalabad region deputy inspector-general (jails) to probe the allegation of torture of condemned prisoners by the central jail staff for not greasing their palms.
Advocate Rao Zafar Iqbal, coordinator of the National Council for Human Rights, had filed a petition with the D&SJ claiming that jail deputy superintendent Muhammad Ayub, assistant superintendents — Malik Rafique and Mian Zahid — and warders Shabbir, Younis Wahla and Anwar Pomi had on June 12 tortured the condemned prisoners on their refusal to bribe the officials.
Some of the prisoners suffered serious injuries and were shifted to the jail hospital.
The judge has ordered DIG (Jails) Kaukab Nadeem Warraich to probe the matter and send a detailed report.
EXECUTION POSTPONED: The execution of four people convicted of gang-rape of a Christian girl was postponed when an Anti-Terrorism Court issued stay order.
The relatives of the four condemned prisoners had approached the ATC and requested some time, as the mercy petition was pending with the president. They said they were making efforts for reconciliation. The court issued stay till June 17.
