Gastro outbreak feared in Taxila

TAXILA, June 11: Citizens have feared an outbreak of gastroenteritis in Wahdat colony of the cantonment area. Residents of the area complained of receiving contaminated water for the last many weeks. Talking to Dawn, they said that the colony comprised over 1,000 houses and due to the infected drinking water they feared spreading of the epidemic.

“Smell is coming from the drinking water supplied to certain areas through the water supply scheme of the Cantonment Board Taxila,” they said.

Utilisation of the dirty water causes many diseases including stomach problems amongst people especially children, they complained adding that stomach problems particularly dysentery was spreading on a large-scale in the areas. “Because the rust of the old water pipelines melts in summer and gets mixed with the water supplied to people in their houses,” a doctor said.

A resident said: “We have registered several complaints of receiving contaminated drinking water with the Cantonment Board but the authorities did not pay any heed towards the problem.”

Despite repeated attempts the Cantonment Executive Officer was not available for comments.

2 KILLED IN ACCIDENT: Two persons were killed and one was injured during road accident here on Sunday.

A speedy car (RIW 2233) turned turtle on the GT road near Qaziabad in the jurisdiction of Wah Cantonment police station.

According to police sources, the driver, identified as Ghulam Ellahi, lost control over the vehicle due to over speeding and reckless driving.

Resultantly two women identified as Nasim Akhtar and Sadiq Bibi died on the spot while the driver was rushed to the local hospital in critical condition.
