KARACHI, June 11: Over 160 handicapped children of Darul Sukoon had fun for over a couple of hours at a function organised by Jimmy Engineer on Sunday afternoon.

They enjoyed music and many of them danced on the floors of Darul Sukoon, a facility for the special children.

Sister Ruth Lewis of the Darul Sukoon on the occasion informed the audience that the institution was established by a Dutch nun, the late Sister Gertrude in 1969 and since then it has been serving the special people with donations, major chunk of which came from different charities in the Netherlands.

Jimmy Engineer said that the function was organised under his ‘Fun and Food’ programme that he had launched approximately four years back. He said that under the programme he took over a 100 handicapped children to different hotels and elite city restaurants so that these special children could also enjoy and have fun like their normal counterparts.

He urged the parents of the handicapped children that instead of hiding them at home they should rather be taken out to parks and playgrounds. He stressed the need that parents should take their special children for outing so that they intermingled with other children.

This, he added, would overcome their shyness and they would feel at ease in social gatherings. Besides, he said, with frequent interaction other children would also start treating the special children like normal people.

He regretted that handicapped people were not even provided their due rights.
