SRINAGAR, June 10: One person was killed and eight were injured on Saturday after troops opened fire on villagers protesting against the alleged desecration of a mosque by soldiers in occupied Kashmir, police said.

Thirteen police and security force personnel were also injured after angry demonstrators hurled stones at them, the army said.

The troops started firing when several hundred protesters in Kupwara district attacked vehicles and marched towards an army camp, a police spokesman said.

“The situation in the area is tense but under control,” the spokesman said, adding police and paramilitary forces had been deployed to “prevent any law-and-order problem.”—AFP
