HYDERABAD: Renowned physician Prof Dr Mohammad Azim Almani breathed his last at a private hospital in Karachi on Friday. He was 92.
Abrar Kazi, his brother in law, told Dawn that Prof Almani had collapsed in his home around a week back. He was taken to hospital for treatment.
He attended his clinic in Hyderabad’s Saddar area, popularly known as Doctor Lane, every Saturday and Sunday.
The funeral prayers will be offered on Saturday (today) after Zuhar at Bilal Mosque, Civil Lines, Hyderabad and he would be laid to rest in the Defence graveyard.
Born in Tando Muhammad Khan, Prof Almani was known for his politeness, humility and helping out needy persons when it comes to healthcare needs.
These values made him an identity of Hyderabad. There are countless stories of him offering a helping hand to people.
Said to be a student of the first batch of the then Liaquat Medical College (LMC), he had also served his alma mater as its principal.
Many of today’s senior professors are either taught by or served under him.
“He was the first student of LMC who became the Fellow of Royal College of Physicians (FRCP),” said Prof Dr Bikha Ram, a former vice chancellor of the Liaquat University of Medical Health Sciences (LUMHS).
“He taught me and he was a teacher of internal medicine which I am associated with as well.”
Prof Almani had also served as the Sindh health secretary.
“He was my teacher and boss as well. He was known for writing the smallest prescription for patients and rarely treating people in private hospitals because he always used to refer patients to civil hospital” said former LUMHS faculty member Prof Dr Noor M Memon.
He said he served LMC as its principal until he was appointed the health secretary.
