KARACHI, June 6: Chaos prevailed at the harbour on Tuesday as fishermen observed a lightning strike against congestion at the harbour. They gathered outside the main office of the Fishermen Cooperative Society to apprise the officials about the problems being faced by them.

They called on FCS director Habib Khan Niazi and informed him about congestion at the port channel due to abandoned boats and repair works being carried out there on damaged vessels.

The fishermen refused to unload fish-catch from boats anchored at the channel. The small fishermen have been demanding for construction a separate jetty in view of frequent traffic obstruction at the harbour channel.

According to Managing Director of Karachi Fisheries Harbour Authority Dr Mohammad Nawaz Baloch, the PC-1 of the proposed jetty had been prepared and a site of the proposed jetty has also been selected.

He said work on the jetty would soon start after completion of preliminary report.

The MD said steps were being taken to remove abandoned boats and notices were being issued.

He said efforts were being made to persuade the Fishermen Cooperative Society to clear KFHA dues so that work on different projects could be started.

He further said that work on modern peeling sheds as required by the EU countries would be undertaken shortly.
