KARACHI: The Sindh government on Tuesday announced that double-decker buses and new electric buses would be launched on Karachi’s roads from next week and new routes for the Peoples Bus Service would also be opened in other districts of Sindh.

In a statement, Senior Minister Shahjeel Memon, who also holds portfolio of transport department, said the double-decker and electric buses were expected to arrive in Karachi by next week.

Chairing a meeting, he said that new Peoples Bus Service routes in other districts across the province would start soon.

The meeting was attended among others by Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Sindh Mass Transit Authority Managing Director Kanwal Nizam Bhutto, TransKarachi CEO Fawad Ghaffar Soomro and Project Director of the Yellow Line Zameer Abbasi.

Officials briefed the meeting on the progress of the Yellow Line and Red Line BRT projects, the upcoming launch of the EV taxi service in the city and the second phase of the Pink Scooties scheme.

The senior minister said that the provincial government planned to launch the EV taxi service by December and add another 500 buses during the current financial year.

He instructed officials to finalise all operational preparations for the new routes and to begin training for women and female students at all divisional headquarters.

Mr Memon also directed them to speed up work on the Yellow Line BRT, complete depots quickly and ensure timely utility transfers so the project’s pace is not affected.

He said that the work on the second part of the Taj Haider Bridge would begin soon and that two-way traffic had started on the bridge from today.
