PESHAWAR, May 26: The Islamabad police have handed over to in-laws a married woman, who had been taken illegally from Peshawar to the federal capital and where she survived an honour-related attempt on her life.
It is learnt that a team of Bhara Kahu police station (Islamabad) visited Peshawar on Thursday and handed over Robeena Zaheen to her in-laws.
Family members confirmed that some officials visited them on Thursday with a request to receive the woman who had been taken to Islamabad by police against her wishes and had been kept in dark about it.
Her husband, Ghulam Ali, is still imprisoned in Adiala Jail where he was sent by a court in Islamabad after he was taken from Peshawar.
Family sources said that Robeena had not yet fully recovered from the injuries she suffered when her relatives open- ed fire on her in a hospital in Islamabad. They said that she could not talk properly and was in a state of shock owing to the detention of her husband.
The Peshawar High Court on May 19 had admitted to full hearing a writ petition filed by Maqsood Ahmad, uncle of Ghulam Ali, challenging the shifting of Robeena to Islamabad without informing the Peshawar police.
The high court had also put on notice the provincial police officers of the NWFP and Punjab, the SHOs of Hasthnagri (Peshawar) and Bhara Kahu police stations (Islamabad) and the provincial home department. The court would hear the petition on May 31.
Robeena had left her parents’ home in Islamabad last month and married Ghulam Ali. The boy hailing from the NWFP had met her in Islamabad. Father of Robeena, Zaheen Ahmad, had registered an FIR at Bhara Kahu police station on April 10 under the Offence of Zina (Enforcement of Hudood) Ordinance, 1979, against Ghulam Ali charging him of abducting his daughter.
Ms Robeena had refuted the allegations before a local court and claimed that her life was in danger because her family members were after her.
She was shifted to Islamabad from a shelter home in Peshawar by a team of Bhara Kahu police station on May 12.
