LARKANA: The management of Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) has finally given a go-ahead to establishment of a fully-fledged hospital with expansion of existing facilities in Larkana.

In a recent communication with the Larkana commissioner, the SIUT has chosen a piece of land measuring 10 acres on Wagan Road for the healthcare facility.

It was learnt the other day that Professor Dr Syed Adibul Hasan Rizvi, director of the SIUT had on Aug 22 written a letter to Larkana Commissioner Tahir Hussain Sangi with reference to the latest visit of the faculty members, Dr Gohar Sultan and other colleagues, for identifying the site on Aug 19.

A meeting was held at the Commissioner’s Office which was attended by MPA Jamil Ahmed Soomro, political secretary to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Commissioner Tahir Hussain Sangi, Prof Gohar Sultan, Dr Khalid Ahmed (SIUT Karachi), Prof Abdul Saboor Soomro (SIUT Sukkur), Larkana deputy commissioner, District Council Chairman Aijaz Ahmed Leghari, Tariq Ahmed Siyal, Larkana Mayor Anwar Ali Luhar , Prof Rajib Denari (SIUT Larkana) and Nazir Ahmed (SIUT Larkana).

Dr Adib informed Larkana commissioner about the decision by a letter on Aug 22

They discussed in detail the pros and cons of the project and three land proposals offered by the district administration. The team visited the sites to assess the possibility to agree and kick start the project of constructing SIUT’s hospital.

He said the SIUT has committed to the Sindh government to provide free-of-cost treatment facilities for kidney and related diseases on the model of the SIUT Karachi to the people of Larkana and its adjoining areas.

Already the SIUT Dialysis Centre in Larkana, equipped with 26 dialysis machines, along with laboratory and radiology services, was functional after it was inaugurated by PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who is also MNA from Larkana constituency. Here more than 21,000 patients are benefitting from these services annually.

The SIUT intended to expand its facilities and for the purpose, the Sindh government in its current budget had earmarked Rs4.5 billion for the construction of a fully-fledged SIUT hospital in Larkana.

Dr Adibul Hasan Rizvi in the letter to the commissioner said: “We require an appropriate piece of land. We are sincerely grateful to you and your team for identifying the land located opposite Noor Housing Colony on the main Wagan Road, measuring approximately 10 acres (436,000 square feet), which is most suitable for this purpose.” He requested the commissioner for allocating and transferring this land to the SIUT so that “we may proceed with the planning and development of the SIUT hospital in Larkana”.

The Larkana commissioner immediately the same day after receiving the letter from the SIUT head office forwarded it to Deputy Commissioner Dr Sharjeel Noor Channa with the directions to take appropriate necessary action and furnish a report on the subject matter as per law/rules and policy.

Sources privy to the issue disclosed to this scribe that the secretary agriculture was approached and asked about helping in transferring the proposed land for the SIUT hospital.

Another source said the Sindh chief secretary will also be taken on board for accelerating the process of land allotment and its transfer as early as possible so that the proposed project could take off without delay.

The SIUT head office also shared the maps of the project with the divisional administration, the sources said.

It was also learnt that instantly the SIUT head office had agreed in principle to extending the current dialysis facility in Larkana from three to four shifts so that more patients could be served, as the number of patients kept rising.
