Published May 24, 2006

KARACHI, May 23: A local train derailed on Tuesday morning near the Cantonment Railway Station suspending the train traffic for hours. Officials in the railway said that the local train, which runs between Landhi to Wazir Mansion railway stations, derailed as the lever to change tracks did not work properly.

The local train was empty and proceeding towards Landhi to pick passengers when the incident occurred. The railway employees in the train remained safe.

The officials said that due to the derailment at around 6:25am, Shalimar Express, scheduled to depart at 6:30am delayed for two hours. Similarly, Shah Rukn-i-Aalam and Awam Express also delayed for one to two hours.

Pakistan Railway Workers Federation President Manzoor Razi said that the point where the local derailed was a problematic area and usually the incidents of derailments of trains occurred there. He claimed that the railway authorities did not pay proper attention to improve the tracks, which posed a constant threat.
