OKARA, May 20: The police claimed on Saturday to have killed in an exchange of fire two of the robbers, who shot at and injured the city union council nazim and drove away with his car the other day.
A police spokesman said a five-member robbers’ gang plundered cash and valuables in two hits in the congested Katchery market near Ghausia Masjid and then shot at and injured union council nazim Afzal Paiji, besides driving away with his car.
On a report, a police party, led by DSP (City) Syed Nazir Shah, went on the gang’s trail and stopped them near Shergarh at Mauza Dev Sial (Chunian Road). The robbers, they said, ditched the car and entered fields from where they started shooting on the police.
He said after an encounter that followed, the police found two of the robbers dead. Their accomplice, identified as Hashim Awan, succumbed to injuries on way to hospital. He identified the other deceased as Sabir Husain and Zahid Husain, saying the remaining two had made good their escape. The police recovered the nazim’s car (LZY-3980), besides arms and ornaments from the gangster.
PROTEST: People from all walks of life on Saturday set up a camp to register their protest against lawlessness.
The Anjuman-i-Tajran and the Muttahida Action Committee, which comprises the city political figures as its members, set up a camp and demanded that the IGP should take stock of lawlessness in the city.
