ISLAMABAD: Over 100 cyclists participated in the Azadi Cycling Championship at D-Chowk, completing a 7.8 km route.

The event was organised by the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) and the Sports Directorate of the CDA in connection with the Independence Day celebrations. Cash prizes were given to winners in all categories, says a press release.

It said the event witnessed enthusiastic participation from professional cyclists, amateur riders and citizens of all age groups, reflecting the growing public interest in cycling as a mode of recreation, sport and eco-friendly transport.

CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Mohammad Ali Randhawa, while addressing as chief guest, emphasised the importance of cycling in the development of a healthy, sustainable and a modern federal capital.

He said cycling not only offers significant health benefits but also helps reduce traffic congestion, minimise pollution and encourage the use of non-motorised transport.

“Cycling is not just a sport; it is a way of life that promotes fitness, protects the environment, and fosters community spirit. By encouraging cycling, we are investing in the health of our citizens and the sustainability of Islamabad,” he said.

The competition concluded with the distribution of prizes and certificates to winners and participants.

The cyclists participated in four categories - women, under-16, seniors, and open. A special short race for children under 9 was also held.
