GILGIT, May 18: Remote and hilly regions of the Northern Areas will be made part of the global communication network following the laying of an optic fibre line in the mountainous region.

Addressing a ceremony marking the inauguration of the fibre-laying project in Astore district, the director general of Special Communication Organisation, Major Gen Shahid Maqbool, said that in about six months the Northern Areas would get modern telecommunication facilities.

He said the laying of the 48-km-long optic fibre line from Thalichi to Astore was a step towards a comprehensive telecommunication network in the region, adding that mobile phones would be introduced there soon.
