The secretary-general of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hussein Ibrahim Taha, has welcomed the announcement by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer of his country’s intention to recognise the State of Palestine next September, according to Wafa news agency.
In a statement, Taha affirmed that this step was in compliance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, and a historic support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
He stressed that recognising the State of Palestine was a “political, legal, and moral duty” that constituted a basis for achieving peace and contributed to protecting and implementing the two-state solution.
He reiterated his call on states that have not yet recognised the State of Palestine to do so and support its full membership in the UN.
