SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: A police sub-inspector was martyred by unidentified gunmen in the Lower South Waziristan district on Thursday evening, officials said.

According to district police officer Khan Khel, the incident took place in the Dazha Ghundai area on the outskirts of Wana, where sub-inspector Mehmood Khan Wazir was gunned down in front of his residence. The attackers riding two motorcycles opened indiscriminate fire killing the officer on the spot.

Police officials stated that the officer was on leave and had returned home from the Wana police lines just days earlier. The assailants managed to flee the scene after the attack.

Police reached the area and cordoned off the surroundings to collect forensic evidence. A search operation has been launched, and an investigation into the incident is currently under way.

The incident has sparked fear and mourning in the locality. Social and political circles condemned the attack, urging authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice at the earliest.
