BAJAUR: Following a street protest by residents, authorities have ordered a probe into Tuesday’s mortar shell attack on a house in the Bara Laghari area of Lowi Mamund tehsil here.

Four children suffered injuries after the mortar shell landed on their house.

Sources told Dawn on Wednesday that the demand for probe was made during talks of jirga members with officials of the district administration and police on Wednesday night.

They said that under the handwritten agreement, titled ‘Aman Jirga’, a probe committee comprising political and social activists and comprising the additional deputy commissioner, assistant commissioner of Nawagai subdivision and SP (Investigation) was formed.

Sources said the committee would identify and punish those involved in the incident.

According to the agreement, a copy of which is available with Dawn, the injured children will receive free medical treatment and compensation in accordance with local customs. Also, special care will be exercised during any action in the region to ensure public safety.

Moreover, the agreement said that security forces’ vehicles would move at low speed in the area to avoid inconvenience to residents.

The protesters, who demonstrated from Tuesday morning to Wednesday night, welcomed the decision, saying it was crucial to preventing similar incidents in the future.
