CHINIOT: Five people were killed and 12 others injured as a result of a collision between a bus and a passenger van near Bus Stand Lalian Town.

Reports said the bus was carrying sugar mill employees to their homes after their shift when it collided head-on with a van travelling from Sargodha to Faisalabad. As a result five van passengers were killed on the spot, while 12 others sustained severe injuries.

Rescue 1122 ambulances shifted the injured to Lalian THQ Hospital and Chiniot DHQ Hospital. Some victims were in a critical condition, prompting authorities to declare an emergency in both hospitals and call in additional medical staff.

The accident was caused by speeding from both vehicles.

The passenger van was completely destroyed, and rescue teams had to cut through its wreckage to retrieve the dead and injured. Further investigation is under way.
