ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Mohammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry met Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam here on Tuesday to discuss strategies for sustainable development in Pakistan’s maritime sector including efforts to conservemarine biodiversity and reducing plastic waste.
A statement issued here said that Romina Alam congratulated Minister Chaudhry on assuming the charge of the ministry and expressed confidence in his ability to promote climate-resilient policies in the maritime domain.
The meeting focused on fostering collaboration between the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Climate Change Division, emphasising green initiatives, coastal ecosystem preservation, and climate adaptation for ports and fisheries.
Mr Chaudhry reaffirmed his commitment to integrating environmentally friendly policies into maritime affairs. He highlighted key initiatives, including sustainable blue economy practices, mangrove conservation projects, and measures to curb marine pollution.
He also underscored the importance of technological advancements in port operations to minimise carbon emissions. Romina Alam lauded the ministry’s efforts and assured full support in implementing eco-friendly policies to mitigate climate change impacts on Pakistan’s coastal regions.
She reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing climate resilience across all sectors, including maritime affairs, to ensure long-term economic sustainability.
Both the officials agreed on strengthening inter-ministerial coordination to align policies with Pakistan’s international climate commitments.
Discussions also covered marine biodiversity conservation, reducing plastic waste in coastal areas, and promoting clean energy solutions for port operations. The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to advancing climate-resilient maritime policies and fostering sustainable development in Pakistan’s coastal and maritime sectors.
