ISLAMABAD, April 27: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has said that ‘appropriate’ steps are being taken to meet the challenges of water, food and energy security.
Talking to a six-member delegation of International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (Iiasa), which called on him at the Prime Minister’s House on Thursday, he stressed the need for developing a system of comprehensive assessment of impacts of climate change or agro-ecosystems in Pakistan to determine right directions for future.
Mr Aziz said that global warming, climate change and the resultant situation would have a major impact on future economies of the world. He said since these changes would affect the agricultural and irrigation systems the government was addressing these issues in a systematic manner.
He told the delegation, led by Iiasa director Prof Leen Jhordijk, that a strategy was being formulated to counter challenges of floods and draughts as a result of melting of glaciers due to global warming.
The water vision of the government includes building reservoirs which will improve irrigation facilities as well as electricity supply, he said, adding that better power and water supplies would ensure sustainable industrial and agricultural development.
The prime minister said the government had already started constructing dams to sustain high agriculture growth.
