KARACHI: Mayor Murtaza Wahab on Sunday demanded that the federal government provide Rs25 billion to strengthen the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) so that development of the mega city be ensured.

He said while speaking at a programme held at the KMC head office to distribute 12,300 street lights across Karachi’s 246 Union Committees (UCs).

The mayor appealed the prime minister to allocate Rs25bn for Karachi.

He said if everyone works together, the city’s development can be improved. He highlighted that “a new era of tolerance in politics” has begun and that developmental projects are underway in all areas of Karachi due to collective efforts.

He urged everyone to set aside political differences and work together for the city’s progress.

Accompanied by Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, the mayor handed over 50 street lights to each UC chairman.

He emphasised that the distribution was impartial, with no discrimination between UCs. “These street lights have been provided to all UC chairmen without any discrimination or distinction,” he said.

He added that the initiative aimed to illuminate various areas during the holy month of Ramazan, ensuring a brighter and safer environment for residents.

The mayor reiterated his commitment to restoring Karachi’s vibrancy, stating that the city’s lights were being revived.

He also noted that the people of Karachi were celebrating Ramazan in peace and tranquillity, highlighting the active participation of young people in various sports events during the month.

“The vibrancy of Karachi is returning,” Barrister Wahab said, urging citizens to take full advantage of this initiative to improve public amenities across the city.

The event was attended by parliamentary leaders of all political parties in the City Council, along with chairmen from various UCs.
