Artists body moves court

LAHORE, April 25: The Movie Artists Association of Pakistan (MAAP) on Tuesday moved the Lahore High Court against the permission to import and exhibit Indian films in the country.

Holding the federal and provincial governments, the Pakistan Film Distributors Association and the Pakistan Film Exhibitors Association as respondents, MAAP president Yusuf Khan contended that the exhibition of Indian movies was banned under a law enacted in 1965 which was still existing.

He contended that the exhibition of Indian films was illegal in the presence of a law which was not amended before allowing screening.

Mr Khan submitted that the permission to exhibit Indian films would deal a severe blow to the Pakistan film industry which was already on the verge of collapse.

The Indian films portrayed a culture which was alien to the Pakistan and was likely to harm the Pakistan society, he added.

The LHC is likely to take up the MAAP writ petition on Wednesday.
