KARACHI: An alarming increase was registered in road accidents in Karachi as nearly 500 people were killed while 4,879 injured in the outgoing year of 2024 due to host of reasons ranging from reckless driving to construction activities, etc, according to hospitals data.

Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed told Dawn that a total of 497 people were referred to three major hospitals namely the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Trauma Centre/Civil Hospital Karachi and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Out of them 67 were females. Sharing hospital-wise data, the police surgeon added that a total of 153 males and 21 females were brought dead to the JPMC, 96 males and 10 females at the CHK and 181 males and 36 females were brought to the ASH for autopsy.

“A total of 4,879 persons injured in road traffic accidents were also reported at three major government hospitals in the metropolis last year,” said the police surgeon.

Out of them 1,035 were females.

Dr Summaiya said that some of them might have died during treatment as the family did not want post-mortem examination.

Sharing data of the hospitals, the police surgeon added that 2,063 males and 893 females injured in the accidents were brought to the JPMC, 617 males and 44 females at the CHK and 1,164 males and 98 females were brought to the ASH for treatment.

Another man killed by dumper

A bike-rider was killed in a road accident in the Memon Goth area on Thursday. A rashly driven dumper hit the motorcyclist and ran him over, adds APP. The victim, identified as Saifullah, died on the spot.
