KARACHI: The Sindh transport department on Thursday formed a committee to check dumpers and water tankers in the city.

DIG-Traffic Ahmed Nawaz Cheema told Dawn that the “Road Checking Committee” was constituted in view of the increasing trend of overloading and over-speeding by heavy vehicles.

The body will be headed by the transport secretary and comprising secretary of the regional transport authority, a representative of the SP-traffic of district concerned and a motor vehicle inspector.

According to the terms of reference of the committee, it will check route permits, fitness certificates and driving licences of commercial vehicle like dumper trucks and water tankers plying on roads “in contravention of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1965 and Motor Vehicle Rules 1969”.

The committee has also been tasked to conduct “snap route checking on identified roads to detect and penalise defaulters of the route permit and fitness certificate fee” and take action against those involved in traffic violations including overloading and over-speeding.

Minister orders action against unregistered dumpers

Sindh Excise Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla has announced strict action against unregistered dumper trucks operating in Karachi.

“All illegal and unregistered dumper trucks in the city must be immediately seized,” he said, adding that these vehicles, recklessly roaming Karachi’s roads, are contributing to the tragic loss of human lives.
