LAHORE: Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has sought construction of at least 20,000 houses for low-income people in Punjab within a month.

Presiding over a special meeting with regard to the Apni Chhat-Apna Ghar scheme here on Tuesday, the chief minister took a detailed review of the progress on the project under which free plots would be provided to homeless people inthe province.

The meeting reviewed various recommendations and proposals for the purpose as the chief minister ordered a detailed review of three and five-marla government housing schemes across the province.

The meeting decided to constitute an eight-member committee to finalise terms of reference (TORs) for providing free-of-cost plots to the public. The meeting was told that directions had been issued to expedite development work on 2,807 plots in 35 schemes in 22 districts across Punjab.

The chief minister directed the officials concerned to expedite development work on 1,119 plots in nine housing schemes in seven districts and completion of the construction of 20,000 housing units by February.

She asserted that the task of constructing 100,000 houses annually should be met under any circumstance.

She was briefed that loans worth Rs8.20 billion had so far been disbursed for the construction of houses. At least 2,050 people have also received the second loan installment for their houses.

The CM was further informed that the number of citizens who visited Apni Chhat-Apna Ghar portal has exceeded 0.728 million and approximately over 0.4m applications, along with complete documents, have been received for the scheme.
