BAHAWALPUR: The deficit of Islamia University Bahawalpur (IUB) has exceeded to Rs2 billion due to which the university is facing a financial crisis.
This was stated by IUB Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Kamran who was given IUB’s additional charge for a period of four months.
Talking to the media in Multan, the VC said in order to pay salaries to the staff, a bank loan of Rs12.5 million with a 13 per cent interest had been got approved.
He regretted that in the past, a large number of recruitments were made and unnecessary allowances were paid creating an imbalance of financial conditions, the adverse impact of which was now being borne by the university. The VC expressed the hope that by taking some revolutionary measures, there would be an improvement with an increase in students’ admissions and soon financial problems would be solved.
Deficit reaches Rs2 billion
He said a strategy had been prepared to make university’s furniture factory functional and giving on lease its agriculture land with a view to generate funds. For this purpose, a syndicate meeting has been convened to take final decisions in this regard, he said.
NOTICES: Mepco has served notices on 213,000 defaulters to recover the arrears of Rs8.704 billion in 13 districts of south Punjab.
According to a Mepco press release, the defaulters have been directed to pay their arrears within a fortnight otherwise their connections would be disconnected and restored only after paying a fine.
The press release said during the period from Oct 1 to Dec 24, after issuing notices under the Land Revenue Act, a recovery of Rs926 million was made from total 22,928 defaulters in the region.
GANG SMASHED: Burewala police in Vehari district claimed on Thursday to have smashed a four-member dacoits’ gang and recovered from them snatched/ stolen articles, including motorcycles.
Those arrested were identified as Tariq, Akhtar, Ehsan and Imran, and they were lodged in the police lock-up.
ARRESTED: Qureshiwala police in Lodhran district on Thursday arrested a man under the Telegraph ACT for making a hoax call to police regarding an attack on his house by 10 dacoits.
When the police reached the scene, they found that it was a hoax call.
Meanwhile, Gailiwal police arrested drug dealer Allah Ditta and recovered 10 kilo charas from his possession.
