KARACHI: Four people, three of whom were teenagers, died in separate accidents involving being hit by heavy vehicles in the city, police said on Saturday.

DIG Traffic Ahmed Nawaz Cheema said two teenagers, who were on a motorcycle, died when a truck hit them on Native Jetty Bridge.

They were identified as Sahil Sher, 17, and Asad, 18. The bodies were shifted to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi. The errant driver was arrested and the truck impounded, the officer added.

Separately, a 13-year-old boy, identified as Akbar Husain, was killed when an unidentified vehicle hit him near Punjab bus stand on main Superhighway. DIG Cheema attributed reckless driving as probable cause behind the accident.

In another incident, Altaf Ali, 28, was killed while Qabil Ali, 25, was injured when a trailer hit them within the premises of Port Qasim. The body and injured were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

Mr Cheema said that they were facing ‘huge challenges’ in the city with regards to incidents involving heavy vehicles. Most of the accidents, he said, occurred due to non-observance of safety measures and due care, plying of heavy vehicles and reckless driving etc. “We have started a campaign for awareness to prevent fatal accidents,” he said, adding “soon we will start strict enforcement against motorcycle riders.”

The officer regretted that on Friday, too, two persons were killed while one was critically injured in a road accident.
