MINSK, April 14: Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko said on Friday he did not expect Russia to carry out its threat to dramatically raise gas prices for his ex-Soviet republic, Interfax news agency reported.

Russia’s gas monopoly Gazprom said last month it would raise gas prices fivefold for Belarus to bring them in line with European prices from 2007. Analysts say such a price hike could badly damage Belarus economy.—Reuters
