Al Jazeera has received comment from Jake Sullivan, the US national security adviser, on efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza.

Sullivan said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed with US President Joe Biden to “take another run at getting a good ceasefire and hostage deal that brings hostages home, including American citizens”.

He added the US president intends to begin that work today by having his envoys engage with Egypt, Qatar and Turkiye, as well as other regional actors.

“There have been ongoing, indirect contacts through the mediators with Hamas in recent weeks. We believe that now that we have a ceasefire in Lebanon, the pressure will only grow on Hamas to reach a deal,” Sullivan said.

“I can’t predict if and when it will happen, but I can tell you that we are going to put every ounce of effort we have into making it happen and getting those hostages home.”
