ISLAMABAD: The embassy of Algeria in Islamabad celebrated the country’s 70th National Day on Friday night.

“Welcome to the ceremony of the Algerian glorious National Day, commemorating the 1954 Revolution when one and a half million Algerians offered the greatest sacrifice to achieve freedom,” said Algerian Ambassador Dr Brahim Romani at a function.

The event, a tribute to Algeria’s seven decades as a nation, highlighted several milestones and achievements of the country since its foundation.

The celebration underscored by Algeria’s deep relationship with Pakistan over several decades and was attended by senior government officials, members of parliament, ambassadors and diplomats.

“We note with pride and appreciation that Pakistan is among the earliest supporters of our liberation revolution in international forums, and recognised the provisional government of the revolution of 1958,” the envoy told his guests.

The annual event also comes as an affirmation of the depth of the longstanding relations between Algeria and Pakistan and the mutual keenness to continue consolidating them in various fields and issues of common interest.

Recognising the long history of solidarity and cooperation between the two countries, the ambassador said Algeria and Pakistan continued to work together in coordination, consultation and mutual support within regional and international organisations, affirming their positions in defending just causes, particularly the Palestine cause.

He congratulated Pakistan for being elected as a non-permanent member in Security Council, wishing it success in its tenure.

Dr Brahim Romani described Algeria’s location as strategic in North Africa opposite Europe bordering five countries in the south, linking it with regions of West Africa, making it a gateway to the continent, and a bridge of communication and cooperation between Africa and Europe. He said his country was rich in human and natural resources - oil, gas and various minerals.

“My country is keen to diversify economic partnerships with various countries and regions including, the South of Asia, in which Pakistan is a pivotal country,” he said, adding, “The last 60 years of diplomatic relations between Algeria and Pakistan have been a source for inspiration and motivation to go on, working together to enhance our understanding and promote and develop cooperation for our common benefit.”

State Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja appreciated Algeria’s support for Pakistan during testing times, supporting peace and justice.

She urged for increasing bilateral trade in various untapped sectors for the mutual benefit of the peoples of both countries.

Later, guests delighted in a blend of Pakistani and Algerian delicacies. Adding to the ambiance, the evening featured enchanting and soulful Algerian songs such as Eddiklami Ya L’gomri by Rabah Driassa, creating an unforgettable cultural experience.
