KARACHI: The University of Karachi and Sindh Madressatul Islam University observed Kashmir Black Day on Monday to express solidarity with the oppressed Kashmiris and condemn Indian atrocities in occupied Kashmir.

KU organised a seminar at its Audio Visual Centre to highlight the decades-long issue.

Former director of the Pakistan Study Centre Dr Syed Jafar Ahmed emphasised the necessity of mobilising global opinion to resolve international issues, including the Kashmir conflict.

Dr Ahmed said Pakistan, despite making speeches and grand claims that garner applause at the General Assembly, had not made sufficient progress.

He stated that Pakistan needsedto adopt a more proactive approach rather than merely reacting to India’s actions.

He expressed optimism that global opinion could play a vital role in resolving both the Palestine and Kashmir conflicts. However, he stressed the need for a clear stance on Kashmir and the importance of advocating for Kashmiris’ right to self-determination at the international level.

“Unfortunately, instead of playing an active role, we have often adopted a defensive stance on the Kashmir issue. To resolve the conflict, we must be proactive globally. We need to convince the world that Kashmir is not just a human rights issue but a matter of self-determination for the Kashmiri people.”

He added that a proactive role does not mean opening a war front but rather presenting the issue diplomatically and peacefully to the world.

KU’s Dean of the Faculty of Arts Professor Dr Shaista Tabassum, and Students’ Advisor, Dr Nausheen Raza, also addressed the event.

SMIU holds solidarity walks

Sindh Madressatul Islam University also organised a solidarity walk on Monday to observe Kashmir Black Day, show support for the Kashmiri people, and raise awareness of their right to self-determination. The walk was led by SMIU Vice Chancellor Dr Mujeeb Sahrai, with participation from deans of various faculties, department chairpersons, officers, other staff, and students. The walk began at the Main Building of SMIU and concluded at the university’s IT Tower.

Earlier, SMIU’s Directorate of Students’ Affairs and Counselling (DSA) held a solidarity program in the university auditorium. During the event, Dr Sahrai condemned India’s occupation of Kashmir and the atrocities committed by Indian forces against innocent Kashmiris. A documentary on Kashmir was also screened, attended by deans, department heads, faculty, staff, and students.
