LAHORE: In a career-boosting move, the Punjab police department on Saturday announced a one-time, five-year age relaxation for constables and head constables wishing to appear for the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) examination for promotion.

The upper age limit has been increased from 35 to 40 years for the upcoming exams for sub-inspector (SI) and assistant sub-inspector (ASI) positions.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Usman Anwar said that the step was aimed to benefit over-age constables and head constables, particularly those who missed their chance due to disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and other unforeseen factors.

He said over 1,000 police personnel were previously unable to appear for the PPSC exam under the P-Cadet Scheme and would now be eligible to take part in the opportunity for promotion.

A Punjab police spokesperson highlighted that the age relaxation would positively impact thousands of constables who had been hoping for such a decision.

He said the officers, previously ineligible due to age constraints, could now advance in their careers and qualify for the much-anticipated SI and ASI posts.

The decision followed an appeal by a large number of constables who had directly approached IGP Anwar, emphasising their concerns about missing career progression opportunities.

Responding to the issue, IGP Anwar submitted a summary to the Cabinet Committee, which subsequently approved the age extension. However, the relaxation will apply only to the upcoming PPSC exam.

IGP Anwar encouraged eligible officers to begin preparations for the competitive examination, which is expected to be announced soon.
