BAJAUR: A police official was killed and two local residents were wounded after unknown assailants opened fire on them in Khar tehsil here on Thursday evening.

Police and residents said that Tahir Rahman, a police constable was on way home along with his brother and a friend when unidentified armed men opened fire on them in Sheikh Kallay area.

They said the policeman died on the spot while his brother Shaukat Khan and friend Fazal Subhan were wounded in the attack.

Both the wounded persons were immediately shifted to the district headquarters hospital Khar for treatment. DSP Abdul Aziz told Dawn that 46-year-old Tahir Rahman, who was performing duty at Lowi Sam police station for the last several months, had come home on leave.

The police official said a search operation was launched soon after the incident to trace the assailants who have managed to flee from the scene immediately.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack till the filling of the report.

Meanwhile, the police successfully repulsed an overnight attack on a police station by unknown miscreants in Mamond tehsil of Bajaur, said a statement issued on Thursday.

According to the statement, unknown miscreants late on Wednesday night attacked Lowi Mamond police station in Laghari area with rocket launchers and other small weapons.

However, the policemen present at the station retaliated and repulsed the attack. The statement issued by the DPO office said that all the policemen remained safe.

It added that DPO Wiqas Rafique along with a team of senior police officials visited the police station on Thursday to encourage the policemen. It said the police officials lauded the policemen for displaying bravery and awarded them cash prizes.
