KARACHI: A young woman was run over and killed by a dumper truck when her scooter slipped on a dilapidated patch of the Rashid Minhas Road near Jauhar Mor on Tuesday, police said.

DIG-Traffic Ahmed Nawaz Cheema told Dawn that 23-year-old Sara Iqbal was riding a scooter. She was on her way from NIPA Chowrangi towards Drigh Road. When she reached the Millennium Mall flyover, the scooter slipped due to the worst condition of the road and a dumper (TKM-214) coming from behind ran her over. As a result, she died on the spot.

The driver of the dumper managed to escape from the spot, leaving behind the vehicle that was handed over to the Sharea Faisal police for investigation purposes.

The DIG said the dilapidated condition of roads after recent rains was not only disturbing traffic flow but causing accidents as well.

Not only Rashid Minhas Road but there were several roads which had developed potholes everywhere in the metropolis because of rains, he added.

He said the traffic police were filling holes/ditches on the roads. “We are trying to make roads motorable after rains on our own,” he said.
