KARACHI, March 26: Sindh Police Department is faced with shortage of female personnel as it has hardly 1,762 policewomen among the total force of 89,393 across the province. Out of 1,762 policewomen, the number of inspectors is 25 only, sub-inspectors 50, ASIs 151, head constables 300 and constables 1200, sources told PPI.

In Karachi, 1,043 policewomen, including 17 inspectors, 30 sub-inspectors, 90 ASIs, 186 head constables and 720 constables are posted.

In Hyderabad, there are 406 policewomen, including four inspectors, 10 sub-inspectors, 31 ASIs, 60 head constables and 265 constables. In Sukkur, there are 313 policewomen consisting of four inspectors, 10 sub-inspectors, 30 ASIs, 54 head constables and 215 constables.

Sources in police department indicated ban on fresh recruitment as the main reason behind shortage of policewomen.

“The department had been sending summaries to the government for permission to recruit more women as they are required much for special security duties on certain occasions. A very small number of women were appointed about six months back but the department still needs more policewomen,” the sources said.

The female personnel are needed especially for dealing with women during rallies, gatherings and public meetings.—PPI
