KARACHI: Celebrating the identity, talent, resilience and relentless pursuit of acceptance and equality by the transgender community, an impactful event, Khuwaab Raqs, was held at the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) House on Sunday evening.

The event, which was hosted by the Gender Interactive Alliance (GIA), Project of Peace and Tehrik-i-Niswan, focused on the acceptance of transgender individuals in society and the ongoing efforts around HIV/AIDS prevention and combating social stigmatisation.

The evening concluded with the screening of a video documentary capturing the essence and outcomes of the workshops. Participants were honoured for their dedication and involvement with awards recognising their contributions and commitment.

The evening began with a powerful panel discussion featuring notable advocates and activists Dr Shoaib Subhani, Advocate Nisha, Chandini Shahid, Sapna Rajput and Dr Aftab.

Speakers highlight need for sustained efforts in HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention

The panel delved into crucial topics surrounding the inclusion of transgender persons in various social and professional spheres while highlighting the need for sustained efforts in HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.

Following the discussion, there was the acting out of a vibrant skit and dance performance, which was presented in street theatre style. The performance artfully depicted the experiences of transpersons/kwajasira in the city and the rest of the country, carrying strong messages of acceptance, celebration, joy, and the need for reforms.

The event was an inaugural testament through performances, discussions and shared experiences of individuals to showcase the power of art and advocacy in driving social change.

It was held at the culmination of workshops organised under the ‘Project Transcend’ initiative, guided by the human rights activist and classical dancer Sheema Kermani.

The workshops had provided a platform for its participants to express their stories and struggles while fostering a sense of community and empowerment.
