PESHAWAR, March 21: NWFP Governor Khalilur Rehman has stressed the need of making concrete efforts to eradicate politics from educational institutions. Speaking as chief guest at the Convocation-2005 of Islamia College Peshawar on Tuesday, he said that some faculty members were involved in politics and the trend trickled down to students. He said parents must come forward and help the government in its efforts to eradicate politics from educational institutions to save future of students.

He said unions and guilds used to be formed to ensure quality of teaching and ethical excellence. But, unfortunately, student unions started pressurizing administration to yield to their fair or unfair demands.

Appreciating the services rendered by the Islamia College Peshawar, the governor said it had created awareness among people and played the role of a pioneer educator. The achievements of the students at that time also impressed the Quaid-i-Azam.

128 graduates were awarded bachelor degrees in arts, science and theology. Ahsan Sami, Rashid Ali Jan, Misbahul Islam and Yousaf Ali achieved gold medals for extraordinary academic achievements, whereas Shahab Ali and Muhammad Furqan were adjudged the best senior monitor and the best student proctor respectively.

Bilal Zaman was declared the best sportsman of the year while Ziaur Rehman and Tassawar Zaman Babar were given the best Qari and the best Naat Khawan awards respectively. Syed Muhammad Sami and Attaullah Bilal were declared the best debaters of English and Urdu respectively, while Ahdian and Taseer Khan were given the awards for being best Pushto and Urdu poets, respectively, of the year.

Earlier, Principal Prof Nisar Muhammad Nisar presented the annual report of the college and highlighted its achievements. Awards were also given to Prof M Ishtiaq, Prof Sher Haider, Prof Farmanuddin and director physical education Abdul Waheed for their extraordinary performance.
