MARDAN: The police killed a proclaimed offender here on Sunday when he opened fire in a bid to escape arrest.

Officials said the incident took place within the remits of Sheilkh Maltoon Town Police Station. They said the slain proclaimed offender identified as Irshad alias Shad Ali resident of Bajaur Koroona was wanted to police in several cases of robberies, thefts and other crimes.

They said the police on a tip-off about his presence in the area, took action to arrest him. They, however, claimed that the proclaimed offender opened fire on the police team on seeing them and tried to escape from the scene.

They claimed that the police personnel narrowly escape in the firing. They said they took their positions and returned fire killing the outlaw on the spot.

DSP Sheikh Maltoon area Izhar Shah Khan, who was leading the police team, said that they tried their best to arrest the PO alive but he was equipped with modern arms and was not ready to surrender.

He said the dead body was shifted to the hospital and and his weapons and cartridges were confiscated.
