SAHIWAL, March 17: Kiln workers on Friday staged a protest demonstration outside the local press club against the arrest of their association president. The protesters were addressed by labour leaders Afzal Poswal, Ms Shazia Wattoo, Salim Bhinder, Ms Khalida Perveen and Imran Anjam. They said the owners paid the workers less than the fixed Rs290 per thousand. The kiln owner made workers captive and subjected them to forced labour.

They alleged that the owners, with the help of police, were maintaining private jails.

They demanded withdrawal of fake case against association president Anjam Raza.

CASE REGISTERED: City police on the directive of the district and sessions judge, registered a case against its SHO.

The sessions court granted pre-arrest bail to Aziz Ahmad in a theft case. However, police arrested him violating its orders. The court appointed a bailiff to recover the detainee. When the bailiff reached the police station, SHO Inspector Asif Kamal misbehaved with him and refused to hand over the detainee to him.

The court, on the complaint of the father of Aziz, ordered police to register a case against SHO Asif.

ELECTION CANCELLED: The Punjab Bar Council has cancelled the election of Anwar Chander as president of the District Bar Association and ordered holding of the fresh elections.

Mehr Nazar Fatyana who contested the election for president in January alleged that Mr Chander managed casting of bogus votes in his favour. The Punjab Bar found the charges correct in an inquiry and cancelled the election.

Mr Chander moved the Pakistan Bar Council. Chairman Kazim Khan of the appellate committee of the Pakistan Bar stopped any action on the order of the Punjab Bar till further orders.

SHOT DEAD: Two persons were shot dead while three others were injured seriously in revenge by their rivals on Sahiwal-Noorshah Road near Batti Tibbi village on Friday.

Reports said that one Lal had been killed in an armed clash between the Saghla family in Chak 56/GD some five years back. On Friday, accused Hamid, Nausher, Riaz, Qutub and Hashmat were returning their village by two bikes after their release on bail by a local court. Near Batti Tibbi village, deceased’s brothers Noor and Zahoor along with their accomplices riding in a car opened fire on them. As a result, Hamid and his nephew Nausher died instantly while three others sustained serious injuries. Injured Riaz was shifted to Mayo Hospital, Lahore, in serious condition. — Correspondent
