KARACHI, March 17: The Sindh Minister for Education and Literacy, Dr Hamida Khuhro, last night said the government had decided to pay special allowance to the teachers serving in rural areas of the province.

“The government also plans to engage teachers from the existing strength to teach English to primary students and pay them an allowance against it instead of recruiting English teachers on higher salaries,” she said while speaking at the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected body of All Sindh Primary Teachers Association at the Arts Council.

“Paperwork for the payment of an allowance to rural primary teachers is underway and I have directed the concerned officials to expedite the process,” she told.

Dr Hamida said, “The federal minister had said that they were recruiting English Teachers on monthly Rs10,000 salary, but I am of the view that since most of our primary teachers were graduates and could teach English to primary classes, the government should engage them and offer an allowance for the purpose. This would greatly benefit the teachers as well as the students.”

She said that under a policy to raise the standard of education, mathematics would also be taught in English to primary students.—PPI
