SI fined for illegal detention

MULTAN, March 15: Additional District and Sessions Judge Malik Azharul Haq Awan on Wednesday imposed a fine of Rs10,000 on a sub-inspector for illegally detaining a rickshaw driver in police lock-up.

The court directed that the fine amount will be paid to the rickshaw driver as compensation. On complaint of torture, the sessions judge also ordered the Civil Hospital medical superintendent to conduct medical examination of the detenu and submit report on March 20.

Petitioner Kaniz Fatima told court that her son Iqbal was arrested by Mumtazabad SI Muhammad Nazim after the passenger he had drove to a motorcycle dealer took away a bike from the dealer’s shop on March 12 to check the two-wheeler’s fitness but did not return. She said her son was waiting for thepassenger to get fare from him for the transportation servicewhen he was arrested.

A bailiff was deputed to conduct raid at the police station and he found the detenu lodged there. The detenu was produced before court on Wednesday by the bailiff with report that no case was found registered against the rickshaw driver. Upon this, the sessions judge declared the detention illegaland directed the SI to pay Rs10,000 to the rickshaw driver. —APP
