QUETTA: Balochistan Health Minister Sardar Faisal Khan Jamali has said the provincial government was paying special attention to reduce infant and women mortality rate by recruiting more midwives.

Speaking at a ceremony organised in connection with the International Day of Midwives on Sunday, the minister said midwives would be hired on contractual basis to provide best care to every mother in the province.

There is a need to start training programmes for midwives at the provincial level, Mr Jamali said, adding that efforts will be made to establish educational institutions that provide education in the field of midwifery.

Appreciating the efforts of the Health Department, the provincial minister emphasised the need to further enhance the role of midwives in society.

Speaking at the ceremony, Balochistan Health Secretary Abdullah Khan praised the performance of the Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) programme and said community midwifery plays a key role in remote areas.

Dr Gul Sabine, the provincial coordinator of the MNCH programme, highlighted the benefits of midwifery in Balochistan and informed about the programme’s development in the province.
