KARACHI: An election tribunal has issued notices to the Election Commission of Pakistan and other respondents on a set of petitions filed by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf-backed independent candidates against the results of three National Assembly constituencies in the city.

The tribunal headed by Justice Adnan Iqbal Chaudhry of the Sindh High Court directed the ECP, returning officers concerned, rival aspirants and others to file their comments by May 15.

In their petitions, PTI candidates Mohammad Alamgir Khan, Dawa Khan and Zahooruddin submitted that they had contested the Feb 8 general elections from NA-236 (East-II), NA-242 (Keamari-II) and NA-237 (East-III) and the Form-45s, obtained by their polling agents from the presiding officers at all the polling stations of the constituencies in question, clearly reflected that they had secured highest votes.

They alleged that their votes were extensively reduced through tampering and forgery of Form-45s and 47s. They said that Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan’s Hassan Sabir and Syed Mustafa Kamal as well as Pakistan Peoples Party’s Asad Alam Niazi from NA-236, NA-242 and NA-237.
